One simple, almost effortless, way to drive more traffic to your website is to increase your tweeting frequency of your evergreen blog posts.
Evergreen blog posts are timeless and always relevant. For example, a blog post on Facebook’s latest newsfeed changes is not likely going to be relevant for long. A post on how to write effective copy for a social media post, however, will be valuable for a lot longer and, therefore, is considered evergreen.
If you have evergreen content on your blog, then you have content that you can always be sharing out on social media. If you only share a blog post when it’s new, you’re missing out on a lot of potential traffic. After all, you put all that effort into writing your posts, you should get the most that you can out of them, even months after they’ve been published!
Some people are afraid to share their own content too often. They’re worried it will make them look self-centered, or overly promotional.
But Twitter moves fast and people are probably only seeing a fraction of your tweets anyways. Your followers are following you for a reason: they want to see your posts! You are doing them a disservice if you are not tweeting often enough to stay visible in their feed. If you only share that blog post a few times, chances are they will miss out on your great content.
It’s your job to make sure that you’re heard, and the best way to do that is to tweet often.
Jeff Bullas consistently tweets out his blog posts every 15 minutes, and he has over 300,000 Twitter followers. While I wouldn’t recommend tweeting quite that often, you can experiment to find a frequency that works for you.
Sharing your evergreen posts out on a regular basis would be a lot of work if you did it all manually. Thankfully there are many tools available to help you out with this.
Here are three recommendations for tools that can help you tweet out your blog posts:
My favorite tool for scheduling evergreen content is Buffer because I can just enter my tweets in and they will be automatically scheduled out for me at the posting times that I’ve selected in advance.
In fact, with my Buffer Chrome browser plugin, I can even just right click on the page and add a blog post to my buffer from there.
When you want to add new tweets, you can actually go to your previously posted updates and click “re-buffer” to add them back into your posting schedule. This saves you the hassle of having to re-write your updates.
Then you can add in some newer updates, and use the shuffle button to mix up the tweets. This will help you avoid being too repetitive.
There is a free version of Buffer but it only holds up to 10 tweets at a time. Paid plans start at $10/month and can be well worth it for the extra traffic you’ll be getting to your site.
Edgar is another tool that is great for resharing content again. It is a relatively new tool and has a bit higher price point.
Edgar works by organizing your updates into categories, and then tweeting them out based on a schedule you create. You can create a category just for your evergreen blog posts and Edgar will recycle those tweets again and again.
Plans for Edgar start at $49/month.
These plugins are less work because once you set them up, you don’t have to worry about ever doing anything. The plugins will add your new WordPress blog posts into the tweeting schedule.
However, the downside is that the plugins don’t know which content of yours is evergreen or not. As a result, you might have tweets go out linking to posts of yours that are no longer relevant.
In my opinion it is better to do the extra work and make sure that you know what is going to be tweeted out. This will provide a better quality experience for your Twitter followers.
As you experiment with tweeting your evergreen posts more frequently, make sure to keep an eye on your Google Analytics. You should see an increase in website traffic that is coming from Twitter. You can also use Google’s URL builder to create links that you can track in your analytics, which will give you even more insights into how well this tactic is working for you.
Your blog is full of content that you can share with your followers on a frequent basis. By sharing out your posts regularly on Twitter, you will gain more visibility on the network and start driving more visitors to your website.
